DTI turns-over SSFs to food processors in Bohol

To address the lack of modern tools in the food processing industry in Bohol, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) turned over P3M worth of food processing equipment to Calamay processors in Albuquerque and Jagna, banana processors from Sevilla, Anda, Balilihan and Maribojoc on August 30.

Heeding the call of President Aquino for all sectors of the economy to be part of the country’s “inclusive growth”, the DTI saw the need to address the market’s stringent requirements for food safety and quality and increase the competitiveness of MSMEs in Central Visayas through the Shared Service Facility Program.

SSF is a program of the DTI that aims to provide local MSME’s common service facilities, modern equipment and access to the latest technology.

With MSMEs constituting around 99% of the total business enterprises in the region most of which lack the needed facilities, DTI saw that shared services facilities can play a vital role in MSMEs complying with the product quality standard that the market demands.

A total of Php 29.584 Million funds have been allocated by the government this year for the establishment of Shared Service Facilities meant to benefit entrepreneurs and to generate jobs in Central Visayas.

The DTI’s SSF projects are expected to directly generate jobs, help the country achieve inclusive economic growth and alleviate poverty in the region.

DTI launches Calamay Processing SSF in Jagna, Bohol

On August 30, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) launched the Shared Service Facility (SSF) for calamay processing in Can-upao, Jagna, Bohol.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between the Jagna Calamay Makers Multi-Purpose Cooperative (JACAMACO) president Maribel Bucog and DTI Central Visayas regional director Asteria Caberte.  The MOA signing was witnessed by Congressman Arthur Yap of the 3^rd District of Bohol, DTI Bohol Provincial Maria Elena Arbon, Mayor Fortunato Abrenilla, Vice Mayor Bonifacio Virtudes, Jr., municipal councillors, representative of Governor Edgar Chatto Glenn Dolorito and project partners.

The Shared Service Facility (SSF) is the DTI’s flagship program to promote the development of small and medium enterprises.  The program aims to improve the quality and productivity of cooperatives, institutions and microenterprises by addressing the gaps and bottlenecks in the value chain of industry clusters by providing processing equipment for their common use.

The JACAMACO was chosen to manage the common service facility in Jagna.  Turned-over to the co-operator were the following components of the SSF package: high pressure steamer, sticky rice mill, trolleys, heat gun, digital weighing scale, stainless racks with trays and stainless steel tables.   These equipment will help the cooperative and other food producers in complying with the requirements of food safety standards.

The DTI is hoping that with the acquisition of these equipment, the JACAMACO can focus on the more important aspects of ensuring product quality, safety, and  production efficiency in order to enhance the Calamay’s competitiveness and better the income of members of JACAMACO.
